Barber Scotia College, also known as BSC, is a Christian college found in Concord in the state of North Carolina. In 1867, Barber Scotia College started as a female seminary. The school was a project by the Presbyterian Church to help young African American southern women prepare for work as teachers and social workers. Then in 1916, the school was renamed as the Scotia Women’s College. Then in 1930, the seminary merged with Barber Memorial College, also a all–female school. The merger prompted the school to change its name to Barber Scotia Junior College for women. Then in 1945, the school awarded bachelor’s degrees and became a 4 year women’s college the next year. In 1954, the school became coeducational and changed its name as Barber Scotia College.
